After Bank Holiday

Bridlington Harbour, 31 May 2010

In the United Kingdom we have a few Bank (Public) Holidays when everywhere is busy, and it also causes disruption to the normal weekly rhythm of work and play

AFTER BANK HOLIDAY

Beware the Tuesday
that feels like Monday
and the giant black crow
on the garden fence

the long weekend
ends abruptly, and
the working week
makes little sense

of course I banged
on the window
and the big, black
bird flew away

but I know
it will beak-tap
the glass at dawn
almost every day

I tell myself
to stay positive
have confidence
and simply believe

only when old
friends are gone
is it time
to stop and grieve

I know the birds
are busily nesting
and often
loudly tweeting

as this warm
opportunity window
is precious, and
always fleeting

Bank holiday Monday was dull and chilly here, so we just wandered around locally instead of going further afield. It was still fun to have a day off and to suit ourselves.

Holidays should relax you and make you feel good. It's sad if an extra day off depresses you. Think of the shorter working week, though! It'll be Friday again a little sooner!

I like crows. They are very intelligent animals (their intelligence has been shown to approach or even equal that of primates) and unjustly maligned and persecuted by ignorant and superstitious folk. I like to see them about the place and it is fun to watch them and work out what they are doing.

We should certainly make the most of any free time.

Love that photo, what are those log things stretching out into the sea? I often see them in various movies and stuff but I don't think I have ever found out exactly what they are...
Good poem, I like days off!

The 'log things' are supposed to minimise the impact of coastal erosion and hold the beach together.

Ooh...I just love the brightly coloured stuff they sell at seaside shops...I want one of everything!

It's so typically English, and rather tacky !

Memories of when I spent four childhood holidays here, it wasn't quite the same place when i returned twelve years later. Sadly, Whitby is the nearest/first stop for me on the Yorkshire coastal schedule with occasional trips further on to Scarborough.
