GAMES
They tell us life is all about games,
helping to shape our specific aims;
it’s no good rotting under a tree,
dreaming of the vital, perfect she.
You can learn much from Monopoly,
lose your shirt playing Totopoly
- a horse racing game – a real wind-up
- don’t forget to seize the shiny cup.
Then they say life is not just a game,
that each working day must be the same:
polish the C.V. and business plan,
you are just a servant of ‘The Man.’
In lunch breaks, perhaps, a match of chess,
or watching your dream French maid undress;
maybe pool will be the perfect cue -
pocketing balls that are straight and true.
Some are astray – lost lotus-eaters,
the poets’ of one hundred metres,
always stumbling at the finish line,
insisting the game is going fine.
